Coldplay, the super-famous British alternative rock band, has been accused of plagiarism. The tune in contention is Violet Hill from their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which rocketed up the UK charts selling 302,000 copies in just 3 days after its release. A Little known Brooklyn band,Creaky Boards,has claimed in its YouTube video that Coldplay have brazenly copied one of their own tunes ironically titled "The Songs I Didn't Write". Included in the claim was the footage from the band's performance at the New York CMJ festival in October 2007. Creaky Boards' songwriter Andrew Hoepfner even went on to accuse Coldplay lead singer Chris martin of having actually been part of the audience at the concert in question.

The clip also goes on to compare both the songs, egging the readers to have their own take on whether somebody as successful and established as Coldplay would actually stoop to actually stealing a tune. A spokesperson for Coldplay promptly denied the accusation with an alibi. The denial states that Coldplay cut a demo for their new album in the march of 2007 and Chris martin could not have possibly been at the CMJ show since he was in London. Though it is not certain whether Creaky Boards, whose alternative-rock sound is supposed to have been inspired by the likes of Coldplay, would actually seek legal assistance to prove their copyright claim, Coldplay loyalists have already, and understandably, slammed the claim. Plagiarism claims are not common in the music industry, with the earliest lawsuits dating back to much before the 19th century. Noted artists that have been put under the scanner include, Michael Jackson, Maria Carey, Gloria Estefan, and, hold your breath, Britney Spears.
